Ally Pologa swished two clutch 3-pointers to spark a 14-0 fourth-quarter run as Kaimuki rallied for a 46-35 win over Kapolei on Tuesday night in OIA Red playoff action at the Hurricanes’ gym.
Kaimuki (7-5) advanced to the double-elimination portion of the playoffs and will travel to Roosevelt tonight. Kapolei (6-5), the fourth-place Red West team, saw its season end abruptly against the fourth-place Red East squad.
Kaimuki overcame some lulls in the first and third quarters.
"We started out just making stupid errors, just the simple things. A lot of it had to do with nerves," Kaimuki coach Mona Fa’asoa said. "We had to pressure the ball and Ally started hitting. When one hits, it opens up everyone else. I told them to keep shooting, and when she hit, it opened it up for Princess. I don’t know when anyone’s going to start hitting, but I have faith in them."
Princess Lauvao led the Bulldogs with 19 points, including seven in the fourth quarter. Point guard Canny Aikau was an ironman again, playing every minute and recording seven points, seven rebounds, six assists and seven steals. Valerie Wilson had 10 points, including five in the final stanza.
It was a sweet finish for Pologa, who has overcome a torn ACL injury. She has chucked her knee brace in recent games.
The Bulldogs have a challenge tonight in facing the East’s toughest squad.
"Roosevelt is going to be a tough game. If we play hard and to our potential, we can come away with a win," Lauvao said.
Fa’asoa doesn’t think her team will have any serious fatigue playing on back-to-back nights.
"Hopefully, all the nerves are out and we play a better game tomorrow," she said.
The season-ending loss was especially tough for the Hurricanes, whose coach, Jesse Baugh, died prior to the season. Chermayne Yago had a team-high 10 points with five rebounds and four assists. Anna Souza tallied eight points and center Kela Whiteurst added nine points. Amayha Dycus, returning from a foot injury that kept her sidelined for five weeks, had four points, six boards and five steals.
