Maui Challenger top seed keeps rolling
No. 1 seed Go Soeda of Japan, No. 3 Michael Russell and No. 4 Tim Smyczek moved into the quarterfinals of the Maui Challenger with victories Thursday at the Wailea Tennis Club.
Soeda, the defending champion, eliminated Hawaii Pacific sophomore Petr Michnev 7-6 (4), 6-1; Russell rallied by Alex Kuznetsov 0-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Smyczek beat Rhyne Williams 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
The $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit event ends Sunday.
Chaminade men win, women lose on road
Senior guard Bennie Murray tossed in 22 points to power Chaminade to a 76-52 men’s basketball victory over Notre Dame de Namur in a Pacific West Conference game Thursday in Belmont, Calif.
The Silverswords are 9-8 overall, 6-3 in the PacWest. The Argos are 5-11 and 4-4.
» In the women’s game, Maya Arellanes scored 19 points as Notre Dame de Namur (2-14, 1-7) posted its first conference victory of the season with a 63-52 victory over Chaminade (1-13, 1-8). Sabrina Angle had 13 points and five rebounds to lead the Silverswords.
