Police arrest suspect in attempted Salt Lake copper theft

A 28-year-old Kalihi man is in police custody after Hawaii Electric Co. security stopped him from hauling away copper wiring from a Salt Lake electrical substation early Wednesday morning.

Police said that two suspects allegedly broke into the substation on Salt Lake Boulevard between 3:45 and 4:20 a.m. and were in the process of taking ground copper wiring they had cut.

The two suspects fled. However, policed traced one of the suspects to a Halona Street address where he was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of attempted theft and two outstanding warrants.
