Alleged copper thief released on bail

A 28-year-old Kalihi man was released from police custody Friday after being arrested Wednesday evening in connection with an alleged early morning copper theft in Salt Lake.

According to police records, the suspect posted $30,000 bail Friday at 4:20 p.m.

Police said two suspects allegedly broke into a Hawaii Electric Co. electrical substation on Salt Lake Boulevard between 3:45 and 4:20 a.m. Wednesday and were in the process of taking ground copper wiring they had cut when security interrupted them from hauling away the copper.

The two suspects fled, but police were able to trace one of them to a Halona Street address where he was arrested Wednesday night on suspicion of attempted theft and two outstanding warrants.
