UH women’s hoops team wins at Cal State Northridge

The Hawaii women’s basketball team asserted control in the second half and got 20 points and 11 rebounds from forward Kamilah Martin in a 65-53 win at Cal State Northridge today.

UH (10-10, 6-3 Big West) kept pace with Cal Poly for second place in league play and dropped CSUN (11-10, 5-4) into fourth. The Rainbow Wahine continue their three-game road trip at Long Beach State next Thursday.

A 12-0 run took UH from down three to up 52-43 with under 12 minutes to play and the Rainbow Wahine held on from there with stellar free-throw shooting (25-for-31).

Martin earned her seventh double-double of the season. Shawna Kuehu added 15 points, Ashleigh Karaitiana 14 and Vicky Tagalicod 10 in the win.

First-year UH coach Laura Beeman earned her 400th career head coaching victory. Of that total, 390 came at Mt. San Antonio College (Calif.)

The Wahine came back from a 9-0 hole to start the game and took a 34-33 halftime lead on Kuehu’s basket in the final seconds of the period.

Violet Alama, a 2009 Kalani graduate, had five points and 10 rebounds in the loss for the Matadors.
