UH’s Iwata named to preseason watch list
Hawaii shortstop Jessica Iwata was among 50 players named to the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year watch list released on Friday.
Iwata made the list for the second consecutive year and is among four UH players to be named to the watch list in the program’s history. She hit .400 last season and led the Rainbow Wahine with 57 runs batted in.
Iwata and Pacific pitcher/utility player Nikki Armagost are the only Big West Conference players on the preseason list. Oklahoma pitcher Keilani Ricketts won the award last year and returns for her senior season. The winner will be announced May 28.
UH, ranked 23rd and 25th in the national polls, opens the season Thursday against Mississippi and UAB in the Oceanic Time Warner Cable Paradise Classic.
The softball program will hold a fundraiser banquet May 5 at the Treetops Restaurant in Manoa. The cost for the banquet is $45 per person and $500 for a VIP table of eight.
The reservation form is available at hawaiiathletics.com. For more information, contact Kevin Kacatin at 343-0661 or kevin@nawahine.com.
