Fast or slow, the Kamehameha Warriors have different ways of getting the job done.
This time, that mastery brought home the ILH girls basketball championship. No. 1 Kamehameha got 11 points from point guard Tiare Kanoa and the Warriors hit eight of their nine free throws in the final quarter for a hard-earned 47-40 win over No. 4 ‘Iolani on Friday night at Kekuhaupio Gymnasium.
The crown is the Warriors’ first since 2002, when the Warriors went on to win the state tournament under then-coach Clay Cockett. This season’s Kamehameha squad, under coach Darold Imanaka, went 12-0 in league play in his second year at the helm (16-0 overall).
“We have a better team now, better chemistry and we work together well,” said Alohi Robins-Hardy, who had seven points. Imanaka left immediately after the game to attend a work-related function, but smiled as he pointed to his players and staff.
“The kids fought through some adversity tonight. It’s a good day for girls basketball here,” assistant coach Kevin Velasco said. “Credit to Eddie (Maruyama) and ‘Iolani. They modified their press-breaker and their zone slowed our game.”
Kamehameha will likely have the top seed when the state tournament begins on Tuesday.
“We’re happy, but this is just the beginning for us. Now it’s serious business at states,” Kanoa said.
The visiting Raiders switched to a 2-3 zone in an attempt to slow the speedy Warriors after halftime.
The tactic worked as ‘Iolani rallied from eight down to 35-33 on Alex Masaquel’s shot in the post early in the fourth quarter.
Kamehameha responded with a 6-0 run, getting a three-point play from Kanoa, a foul shot by Robins-Hardy and a bucket in the post by Lilia Maio (six points) on a feed from Tori-Jean Cambra.
After ‘Iolani scored on another Masaquel basket to make it 41-35, the Warriors spread the floor and began running a four-corners offense with 4:35 remaining. That brought the Raiders out of their zone, and though the Warriors had a few miscues — the visitors cut the lead to 41-38 with 2:03 left — Kamehameha successfully ran time off the clock.
After Masaquel fouled out with 1:38 left, Abrianna Johnson-Edwards (17 points) drove through traffic to keep the Raiders within 43-40 with 1:31 to go.
But Jade Botelho (10 points, seven rebounds) missed a layup and Robins-Hardy sank two foul shots for a five-point lead with 46 ticks left.
After Bailey Choy missed a corner 3, the Raiders caught a break when an inbounds pass went through the hands of Robins-Hardy. But ‘Iolani struggled against Kamehameha’s tough man-to-man defense and was unable to get a shot off. A turnover in the final 10 seconds all but sealed it.
Maio added two free throws with less than a second remaining to end Kamehameha’s long ILH title drought.
Masaquel finished with 11 points, five boards, two blocks and two steals for ‘Iolani (13-6), which was 9-3 in league play and had already clinched a state berth with a win over Punahou on Wednesday.
“Kamehameha, they’re good. They know how to beat us,” Masaquel said of her team’s third loss to the Warriors in as many tries.
Kamehameha shot 37 percent from the field (14-for-38), but was 17-for-24 at the foul line.
‘Iolani had a narrow edge on the boards, 22-21, but was 1-for-10 from 3-point range. The Raiders shot 41 percent from the field (15-for-37), led by Johnson-Edwards’ 6-for-11 shooting. They were 6-for-11 from the free-throw line and finished with 20 turnovers.
Kamehameha committed 18 turnovers.
