Labrador breed fetches Honolulu’s heart
The Labrador retriever is again the top dog in Honolulu, ousting the Chihuahua in the annual American Kennel Club’s rankings of the most popular dog breeds.
The golden retriever and bulldog also entered the Honolulu top five in 2012, taking the second and third spots.
"Honolulu gave a welcoming aloha to large breeds in 2012," AKC spokeswoman Lisa Peterson said in a news release. "The Labrador retriever was the most popular breed and the golden retriever made a big jump from 12th to second. The smaller breeds such as the Chihuahua, Pomeranian and Yorkshire terrier dropped down on the list."
Rounding out the Honolulu top five were the German shepherd, which was also No. 4 last year, and the Chihuahua, which dropped down to fifth place.
The Labrador retriever is also the top dog nationally for the 22nd consecutive year, tying with the poodle for the longest reign in the top spot.
In other national rankings, the bulldog became the fifth most popular dog in the U.S., according to AKC registration statistics, bumping the tiny Yorkshire terrier into sixth place for the first time since 2003. The golden retriever overtook the beagle for third place, and Rottweilers continued their climb up the top 10 list by taking ninth place away from the dachshund, both adding to the bigger-breed trend.
