Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that destroyed a carport and partially damaged a home in Kahuku Thursday morning.

Initial investigations indicates the fire was apparently caused by the ignition of oxygen and acetylene tanks in the carport, said Capt. Terry Seelig, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman.

The fire was reported at 8:27 a.m. on the 56-000 block of Kekauoha Street. It was reported under control at 8:47 a.m. and extinguished by 10 a.m.

A neighbor, who tried to control the blaze with a garden hose suffered minor injuries, but was not taken to the hospital.

Damage to the carport was extensive, Seelig said, and the structure’s roof collapsed.

The fire also damaged a detached home.
