UH’s Eggens gathers water polo honor
Hawaii has already felt the impact of Monika Eggens’ return. The senior, who spent last year training with the Canadian national team, was named Big West women’s water polo Player of the Week on Wednesday.
It is the first Big West honor for Eggens and UH as they enter their inaugural year in the league. She earned it in the first week of play, collecting 19 goals in six matches as the No. 11 Rainbow Wahine opened by going 4-2 on the road.
The two-time All-American had five goals in a 14-6 win over No. 14 Indiana and added three more in a 14-8 triumph against No. 12 UC Davis to highlight UH’s efforts at the Stanford Invite. Eggens had another hat trick in a 12-7 loss to third-ranked UCLA and four goals in a 16-6 win at Santa Clara.
Eggens and the Wahine return to action when they travel to California for a match at Claremont on Feb. 21. Their home opener is March 6 against Michigan.

The University of Hawaii Hilo is tied for 14th and UH is tied for 18th after the first round of the Amer Ari Invitational on the Waikoloa Kings’ Course on Hawaii island.
The Vulcans are tied with Osaka at 5-over 293. The Warriors are tied with UC Davis after shooting 10-over 298.
TCU and UCLA sit tied atop the team standings after shooting 11-under 277.
TCU’s Daniel Jennevret shot a 5-under 67 to take the first-round lead with eight golfers tied for second at 68.
The Vulcan’s top golfer was Corey Kozuma, who shot 1-under 71 and tied for 23rd. Tied for 51st place and two strokes back is Jamie Hall. For the Warriors, junior Nainoa Calip, a native of Hilo, and sophomore Ryan Kuroiwa shot 2-over 74, tied for 67th.
