The Pearl City boys soccer team might not have many advantages when it plays ILH champion Punahou today, but it can probably count penalty kicks as one of the few.
The Chargers made 10 penalty kicks in a shootout to beat King Kekaulike 1-0 in the first round of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts/HHSAA Boys Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Park on Wednesday.
The teams both had their chances but played regulation and two overtimes scoreless before the marathon shootout.
"No coach ever wants to go into a position where you have to go into a shootout," Pearl City coach Randall Shinn said. "Basically you just have to pick your shot and go with it. It’s 50/50."
Both teams made all five of their kicks in the first round and three in the second before a short break for the referees to determine who was eligible for the third round. Once they agreed that anyone could participate, Pearl City’s Tyler Terashima and King Kekaulike’s Kolomona Salomon each scored easy goals. Chargers keeper Jared Louis, who made two stops in 11 tries, stepped out to the line and beat King Kekaulike keeper Cameron Baker. He then retook his place in goal and stood ready to react when Reece Ibara of the Waveriders booted his attempt wide right. Ibara veered off for some alone time as Pearl City mobbed Louis.
"It was nerve-racking and a little bit frustrating," Louis said. "I was just trying to keep my team in it, maybe give my team a chance to win it. I was flooded with relief."
The Chargers move on to the stadium to play Punahou at 5 p.m. King Kekaulike drops into the consolation bracket.
Kapolei 4, Kaiser 0
The Hurricanes got a pair of goals from Captain Brandon Begonia and one each from Keo Ponce and Dylan Orian in a shutout of the Cougars.
Kapolei played shorthanded in the entire second half after Shandon Hopeau was whistled for two yellows, which became a red card, in the 32nd minute. Kapolei played the rest of the first half with 11 players despite protests from Kaiser coach Marco Antonio Gloria. Gloria says an assistant referee told him during the action to check the rule book, that the Kapolei player had been given a "soft red" and the team could play on at full strength.
Officials realized their mistake at the break, though, and made Kapolei play the entire second half with 10 players to Kaiser’s 11. No matter, Kapolei still outscored the Cougars 2-0 even while down a man. The center official declined comment.
That didn’t soften things for Gloria, though. Kaiser lost to Kapolei in overtime in the OIA tournament on what Gloria thought was a bad offside call and he considers Kapolei’s first two goals on Wednesday to have been offside as well.
The Cougars drop into the consolation bracket to play King Kekaulike, while the Hurricanes play Kealakehe at 3 p.m. in the stadium.
‘Iolani 6, Campbell 0
The Raiders got goals from six different scorers and rolled over the Sabers to advance to the second round.
Tristan Medios-Simon opened the scoring in the ninth minute, followed by Kainoa Fong (26th), KJ Ahlo (37th), Timmy Leong (49th), Quinn Cowa (53rd) and Brandan Seto (75th).
The Raiders play Kamehameha-Maui today at 1 p.m. in the stadium.
The Sabers play Hilo today at 1 p.m.
Kalani 7, Hilo 1
Leo Klink, who took the Falcons on a ride to the finals last season, scored three goals and Kalani jumped on the Vikings from the kickoff.
Klink got the party started in the fourth minute and added goals in the 43rd and 60th minutes. Steve Teshima, Jarrett Hayama, Marcus White and Ryan Bui all added goals for Kalani, which suffered a loss in penalty kicks to Campbell in its first match of the OIA tournament. The Falcons made it clear that result is far in the past, though.
The Falcons move on to play top-seed Mililani in a rematch of last year’s final at the stadium at 7 p.m.
