Kapaa finds itself in a familiar position — in the Division II boys soccer state championship game.
The Warriors, who lost the past two years in the title game to Honokaa, jumped on Kalaheo quickly en route to a 5-2 semifinal win at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Friday.
Kapaa of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation goes for its second state title in five years when it takes on Mid-Pacific of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in today’s 5 p.m. final at the stadium. The Owls upset top-seeded Konawaena in the other semifinal.
Tanner Henry opened the scoring for Kapaa in the fifth minute, and Michael Alonzo upped it to 2-0 three minutes later.
Kalaheo’s Tyler Williams scored in the 19th minute to pull the Mustangs to 2-1 at the half.
Edsel Lactaotao’s goal in the 56th minute pushed Kapaa’s lead to 3-1, only to have Kalaheo’s Reece DeMello score (69th) to close it to 3-2.
JB Goode’s goal (78th) gave the Warriors a two-goal lead and Alzon added his second goal (79th) to finish the scoring.
Kapaa’s first state title came in 2009 when it beat Hawaii Prep in the final.
Mid-Pacific 3, Konawaena 0
The Owls defeated the top-seeded Wildcats from the Big Island Interscholastic Federation to advance to their third title game in the past six years. Mid-Pacific, which won state titles in 2008 and 2010, got goals from Kye Drageset (19th), Eshan Mehta (71st) and Shinichiro Maeda (77th).
