"We are not going to release inmates simply to reduce the cost of incarceration. What we want to do is manage the risk to public safety,” said Ted Sakai, director of the state Department of Public Safety.

The state Senate voted unanimously Thursday to confirm Ted Sakai as director of the state Department of Public Safety.

Sakai was appointed last June and has served as interim director of the department that oversees state prisons until his Senate confirmation.

Sakai, a veteran corrections administrator who once served as the warden of the Waiawa Correctional Facility, had previously been public safety director during Gov. Ben Cayetano’s second term.
