Fire damages maintenance building
Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a fire that caused $100,000 worth of damage to a maintenance building Tuesday night at the Wahiawa Botanical Gardens.
Capt. Terry Seelig, Fire Department spokesman, said the fire, reported at 10:56 p.m., was confined to one of three bays of the maintenence building at 1396 California Ave. The fire damaged the bay that housed lawnmowers, weed eaters and other maintenance equipment. It was brought under control at 11:08 p.m.
There were no injuries.
12-year-old victims kidnapped, robbed
Police arrested Tuesday one of two girls who allegedly robbed and kidnapped two 12-year-old girls in East Honolulu.
Police said the suspects forced the 12-year-olds to go with them between 4:30 and 8 p.m. Tuesday to three separate locations.
They then took the 12-year-old girls’ personal items by force and warned them not to report anything, police said.
Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of two counts of second-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree kidnapping.
Police would not provide the age of the suspected girl.
Felon arrested on warrants, in break-in
Prosecutors charged a 29-year-old convicted felon Wednesday after he eluded police and hid out in a house in Sunset Beach.
At 4:09 p.m. Tuesday, police arrested John Serrano, 29, who was wanted on several outstanding felony warrants.
Earlier, they saw him driving a car, but Serrano spotted the officers and sped off. The officers pursued, but lost sight of him near Sunset Beach, police said.
Officers searched the area and found him hiding in a house he had allegedly broken into on Ke Nui Drive.
He was arrested Tuesday and charged Wednesday with unauthorized entry into a dwelling, drug offenses, resisting arrest, reckless driving and driving without a license. His bail was set at $20,000 for those charges.
Serrano’s criminal record includes terroristic threatening, unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, drug and abuse convictions.
Suspected arrested in 2010 bank robbery
Police arrested a 61-year-old Waikiki man Tuesday at his home for allegedly robbing a bank nearly three years ago.
The robbery occurred on March 18, 2010, in the Honolulu area.
Police said the man entered the bank and demanded money.
Police arrested the man on suspicion of second-degree robbery.

Maui man charged with murder attempt
A 49-year-old Makawao, Maui, man was charged Tuesday with second-degree attempted murder in an alleged attack on a woman at a party in a Lahaina apartment.
Calvin Borge is being held at the Maui Community Correctional Center with bail set at $100,000.
At 2:22 a.m. Tuesday, witnesses told police, Borge approached the 53-year-old woman from behind, placed her in a neck hold and used an envelope opener with a semi-serrated blade to "slit" the front of the woman’s neck, police said. They were attending a Presidents Day gathering at an apartment on Wainee Street.
The woman was taken to the Maui Memorial Medical Center for treatment and was released in satisfactory condition.
Woman, 67, dies after being found floating
A Kailua-Kona woman apparently drowned Wednesday in the ocean near Kailua Pier, police said.
She was identified as Nga Angie Prieto, 67.
In response to a 9:30 a.m. call, officers determined that a woman swimming near buoy No. 3 had discovered Prieto floating face-down and unresponsive, police said.
The swimmer flagged down a tender boat from a cruise ship and the victim was pulled aboard, police said. Personnel on the boat attempted CPR and took the victim to shore, where Fire Department personnel continued CPR. They took the woman to Kona Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:57 a.m.
Police ordered an autopsy.
