Police arrested the father and brother of a Roosevelt High School junior varsity wrestler last weekend after they allegedly hit two referees following a loss by the Roosevelt wrestler.
The two men were arrested Saturday after the match at Farrington High School, said Raymond Fujino, executive director of the Oahu Interscholastic Association and Department of Education athletics administrator.
Police said the 47-year-old father and the 25-year-old son, who is a volunteer assistant coach at Roosevelt, were released pending further investigation. They were arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.
Fujino said the incident began when the father left the stands after his son had lost his match to a Waianae High School wrestler.
The father confronted a referee and hit him, Fujino said.
At that point the 25-year-old suspect hit another referee who stepped in to try to stop the assault, Fujino said.
Correction: No displinary action has been taken by the Oahu Interscholastic Association against the father and brother of a Roosevelt High School wrestler following a fight at last weekend’s wrestling match. Action, if any, would take place after a pending meeting with the OIA, high school officials and the two men involved. An earlier version of this story reported that the OIA disqualified the wrestler’s brother from participating as an OIA coach for the rest of the season, and that the father was banned from matches. |
