Timing is everything come tournament season and Mililani’s was impeccable on Wednesday.

The Trojans picked the perfect time to put together their best first-half performance of the season and rolled to an 84-68 Division I win over Kamehameha-Hawaii in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Boys Basketball State Championships at Moanalua.

Mililani scored 51 points over the first 16 minutes and advanced to a quarterfinal matchup with second-seeded Kalaheo today at 7 p.m. at Moanalua.

"That was kind of scary that we put up that many points, considering when we played Pearl City on Friday (in the OIA Red playoffs) we only put up 13," Mililani coach Ed Gonzalez said. "So far, this is the best we’ve played."

Mililani forward Ian Namu led four Trojans in double figures with 25 points, 14 coming in their blistering first half, and guard Noel Bueno finished with 18.

"We’ve always started slow in the first half," Namu said. "Coach just told us to warm up hard so we were just ready to go. I think the biggest thing was we came together as a team better than we ever did before."

The Trojans’ willingness to share the ball led to open looks inside for Namu and their defense created transition baskets as they built a 24-16 lead after the first quarter.

Mililani then opened the second quarter with a 14-2 run to push the lead to 20 and led 51-30 at halftime.

Led by senior guard Shaun Kagawa, Kamehameha-Hawaii steadied itself in the third quarter and the Warriors closed to 64-54 on a 3-pointer by Blaine-Allen Manliguis. But Kamehameha-Hawaii got no closer and will play in a consolation bracket game at 3 p.m. today.

Kagawa led the Warriors with 25 points.

"They looked shell-shocked (in the first half)," Kamehameha-Hawaii coach Dominic Pacheco said. "You could see the difference in the third quarter. We started playing.

"You dig yourself a hole down 21 points, it’s tough."
