Street art goes big with woodcut printing
Printmakers are taking to the streets — or, at least, their art is — when a pavement roller presses images from 4-by-8-foot inked woodcuts onto oversize canvases on the streets of Chinatown for "Print Bigger 2," an event that’s part of First Friday festivities from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday.
The roller will be working on Hotel Street between Smith and Maunakea streets.
Ten solo artists and artist teams, including University of Hawaii and community college art students, have worked since last fall on the woodcuts, centered on the sustainable food theme "Grow Your Own."
The resulting relief prints will be on display March 12 to April 6 at The Arts at Marks Garage, then will travel around Chinatown and to schools around the state.
Talks aim to demystify food labeling
Learn the facts about food labels and nutrition at three free presentations in March. The talks are part of the Senior Summit program, presented by Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, focusing on health and personal growth topics specific to seniors.
During the "Just the Facts, Please — Nutrition Facts, That Is" session, attendees will learn to solve the "mysteries of the food label" to make good diet choices. Speakers are registered dietitians Jennifer Davis and Letty Nagata.
The hourlong program will be presented at three locations:
» Leeward YMCA, 11:15 a.m. March 6, 94-440 Mokuola St.
» Kaiser Waipio Clinic, 10 a.m. March 11, 94-1480 Moaniani St.
» Nuuanu YMCA, 9 a.m. March 20, 1441 Pali Highway
