HPU women upset No. 19 Grand Canyon
The Hawaii Pacific women’s basketball team went on a 7-0 run in the final two minutes to upset Division II 19th-ranked Grand Canyon 64-63 in a Pacific West Conference game Saturday in Phoenix.
The Sea Warriors improved to 16-6 overall and 12-4 in the PacWest, while the Antelopes (21-6, 13-3) fell into a share of first place with California Baptist with two regular-season games to play.
HPU had five players score in double figures, led by Melody Ladrido with 13. Heidi Anton had 12, Mikela Thoemmes 11, and Susannah Walmsley and Skye Savini 10 each.
The Antelopes led 60-57 with 1:57 to play. Thoemmes scored on a layup at 1:36 and Savini on a 3-pointer with 45 seconds left. Walmsley and Savini hit free throws as HPU built a 64-60 lead.
BYU-Hawaii men down Dixie State
Deandre Medlock scored 23 points and Pablo Coro added 15 to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to an 80-75 victory over Dixie State in Pacific West Conference men’s basketball Saturday in St. George, Utah.
The Seasiders are 15-10 overall and 11-5 in the PacWest. Zach Robbins led the Storm (18-6, 13-3) with 22 points.

The Antelopes (22-5, 13-3) share first place with Dixie State and Chaminade. HPU fell to 9-14 and 6-10.
Vulcans close tournament with shutout
The Hawaii Hilo softball team belted out 19 hits in a 12-0, six-inning shutout of Western Oregon to wrap up the Hilo Round Robin tournament on Saturday at Samura Stadium in Waimea.
The Vulcans lost to Missouri West State 10-2 earlier in the day, but rebounded to improve to 11-11.
Kristina Victa and Rebecca Lee each had four hits against Western Oregon. Hawaii Hilo’s Hannah Peterson held the Wolves (7-10) to five hits and a walk while striking out two.
Beeman and Eovino to speak at QB Club
University of Hawaii women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman and Don Eovino, a marathon runner and triathlete, are the scheduled guest speakers for the Honolulu Quarterback Club’s luncheon on Monday at the Maple Garden restaurant.
Lunch starts at 11:30 a.m., followed by the program beginning at noon. The cost is $15 per person for members and guests, and the public is invited.
Kono tied for lead in Gateway Classic
Punahou graduate Stephanie Kono is tied for the lead in the VisitMesa.com Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz.
Kono was at 4 under for the tournament and 3 under for the day when play was suspended due to darkness Saturday, tied with Alena Sharp and Tiffany Joh in the Symetra Tour event. Kono played 14 holes and is scheduled to finish her second round today.
Sharp (72) and Joh (70) both finished their rounds and are at 140.
Kono played on the LPGA Tour last year.
