Federal grant goes to improve historic trail
The federal government is providing $275,000 to improve a historic Hawaii island trail.
The U.S. Transportation Department money will pay for road paving, parking and signs at the Ala Kahakai National Historic Trail in the South Kohala District.
The trail follows an ancient shoreline footpath called the Ala Loa. The footpath was the major road connecting more than 600 communities from the 15th to the 18th century.
The route is one of just 18 across the country to be designated a National Historic Trail. Others include the Iditarod, the Pony Express and the Trail of Tears.
