Hilo man makes try for top 20 on ‘Idol’
Bryant Tadeo of Hilo will attempt to break into the top 20 on "American Idol" when he performs on the Fox TV show, airing at 7 p.m. Thursday on KHON/Fox.
Tadeo and nine other male singers will appear before judges Nicki Minaj, Randy Jackson, Keith Urban and Mariah Carey during the Las Vegas round.
The 23-year-old so far has not gotten much attention on the show, and was last seen during the Hollywood eliminations when Minaj chided him for complaining that he was tired from the intense competition.
Tadeo’s most recent video post on the "American Idol" website (www.americanidol.com) shows him in the Las Vegas neighborhood where he lives, climbing a hill to "get into my own thoughts" as he prepares for the next stage of the contest.
Like last week, 10 female singers will compete tonight and 10 male singers on Thursday, with the judges choosing five from each group to advance. The male singers previously picked to move on are Charlie Askew, Curtis Finch Jr., Paul Jolley, Elijah Liu and Devin Velez.
The last group of female singers competes tonight on the show.
Kennel Club to hold 2 days of shows
On the heels of the prestigious Westminster Dog Show at Madison Square Garden comes the search for Hawaii’s top dogs at the Hawaiian Kennel Club AKC All-Breed shows at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall on Saturday and Sunday.
The local club, founded in 1906, is the oldest kennel club west of the Mississippi. Because it’s difficult for Hawaii dogs to compete regularly in shows outside the state to rack up the necessary points to qualify for Westminster and other honors, the Hawaiian Kennel Club will hold back-to-back shows to take advantage of visiting judges from around the world who are being brought in for the weekend events, said club spokeswoman Carol Williams.
More than 300 dogs representing 59 breeds are expected to be entered each day, with many of the canines competing both days. Williams said Shetland sheepdogs will field the largest number of entries.
Judging will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday and continue through most of the day, with best-in-show honors awarded both days.
Admission is $5 per day (free for children ages 12 and under). Only pets registered for the show will be allowed at the venue. For more information, call Gerri Cadiz at 262-5236.

Learn aquaponics at garden workshop
"Economical Aquaponics" is catching on, and the Board of Water Supply and the Friends of Halawa Xeriscape Garden are bringing back this popular workshop from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 9.
Aquaponics is the cultivation of plants and fish in a self-sustaining environment. An aquaponic system, which can be used to grow organic produce, uses up to 95 percent less water than a traditional in-ground garden and eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers, according to workshop organizers. It also is a good way to make use of underutilized yard space.
The workshop with HappyPonics Farm will take place at the Halawa Xeriscape Garden, 99-1268 Iwaena St. The cost is $5, free for Friends members.
The deadline to register is 2 p.m. March 8. Call 748-5363 or email workshops@hbws.org to register.

Vaughan Award for Poetry winner, Cassandra Aoki, will be honored at the event. The cost is $20 ($10 for students) and includes continental breakfast and drinks at lunch.
