High surf and waves to last until evening
The National Weather Service is warning oceangoers to be aware of continued high surf as an elevated northwest swell is expected to gradually decline through today.
Through 6 p.m., a high-surf advisory is in effect for the north and west shores of Niihau and Kauai; the north shores of Oahu, Molokai and Maui; and the east shores of Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Maui and Hawaii island.
Forecasters predict waves of 10 to 15 feet along north shores and 6 to 12 feet along west shores.
Surf conditions could result in strong breaking waves, shore break, and strong longshore and rip currents.
Meanwhile, a high-pressure system north of the state is expected to sustain tradewinds for the next several days. Forecasters say clouds and passing showers will favor windward and mauka areas, with a few brief showers over some leeward locations.
Search ends for Kauai man
Rescuers suspended their search Saturday for missing Kilauea, Kauai, man Scott Akina.
Personnel from the Kauai Fire Department, the Kauai Police Department, the Ocean Safety Bureau, the state Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement, and the Coast Guard had been looking for Akina, 55, since Tuesday night, after he reportedly went for a swim at Ninini Beach that afternoon and didn’t return.
According to Kauai police, the unified teams searched through hazardous conditions, including high surf and strong winds, with up to five vessels, four personal watercraft, and two helicopters searching the sea and shoreline from Hanamaulu to Kalaheo.
Up to 20 police officers walked the coastline on foot.
With no sign of Akina’s body, the search was called off at noon.
