Medical examiner identifies woman who died in Makiki motorcycle-car crash
The medical examiner’s office has identified the 32-year-old woman who died Sunday after the motorcycle she was driving struck a car as it turned into a driveway in Makiki as Helen Hites.
She was taken to the hospital following the 1 p.m. collision on Thurston Avenue in "extremely critical condition" where she died.
Police believe the woman was heading east with a group of at least three other motorcyclists. A black Dodge Charger, an off-duty taxicab, was turning into a driveway from the westbound lane.
Police are unsure whether speeding was involved, but said visibility may have been a factor because the motorcyclist was coming up a slight hill.
The driver of the Dodge had minor injuries from broken glass but refused treatment. There was extensive damage to the passenger-side door.
The death was the 13th traffic fatality of the year on Oahu, compared with 16 for the same period last year, police said.
