Wild baseball scores in BIIF
It’s not often that a team scores 15 runs in five innings and loses.
Konawaena’s 25-15 win over Pahoa on Saturday, which was stopped after five frames due to the 10-run mercy rule, included some off-the-chart statistics. Pahoa finished with 10 errors but led 9-3 after two innings.
The visiting Daggers also threw 12 wild pitches in the final two innings.
Pahoa outhit the home team 9-8. but Konawaena committed just two errors. The Wildcats’ 10-run fourth inning included five walks, five wild pitches, two hit batters and two errors.
That wasn’t the only bizarre game on Hawaii island on Saturday. Hilo trounced Hawaii Prep 30-5 after receiving 24 walks from a generous home team.
Kahuku goes 7-2 on ‘touch’ trip
It may sound odd, even ludicrous, but a dozen Kahuku Red Raiders traveled nearly 3,000 miles — to Las Vegas — to play touch football.
Kahuku’s team, under the Hukilau Cafe banner, played in the New Level Athletics 7-on-7 west regional tournament over the weekend. The reward is what made the trip worthwhile, Kahuku assistant coach Darren Johnson said.
"It’s about the kids competing with mainland competition. Can they run with the fastest kids on the mainland? The answer is yes," Johnson said after Kahuku’s team, wearing jerseys donated by Hukilau Cafe, went 7-2 and finished among the top teams of the 48-entry field.
The team comprised 12 underclassmen: Soli Afalava, Manaia Atuaia, Kuuliko Carvalho,Kaimi Hurlbut, Ashley Kaka, Hirkley Latu, P.J. Liua, Malcolm Macatiag, Clifford Ramseyer, Keala Santiago, Lamone Williams and TuliWily–Matagi.
"We didn’t come here to fool around and go to the mall," Johnson said by phone on Sunday.
