Police arrest only survivor of car involved in fatal crash
Maui police arrested and charged a 22-year-old Pukalani man with manslaughter and other charges in connection with a head-on crash in Kula last year that killed five people.
Libert Qalivere is being held on $750,000 bail after being charged with five counts of manslaughter, one count of negligent injury, two counts of inattention to driving and operating a vehicle while under the influence.
Officers arrested Qalivere at his home on Tuesday morning.
At the time, police said speed and alcohol were factors in the March 25, 2012 collision on the Kula Highway near Noholoa Place. The five victims were ejected from a Dodge Neon that crossed the center line and crashed into a blue 2003 Suzuki Aerio.
Qalivere, who was wearing his seat belt and was the driver of the Neon, was the only survivor from the car.
Arriving officers found three men and a woman dead at the scene. A fifth man died en route to Maui Memorial Hospital, police said.
