Maui police arrest man who allegedly fled bank robbery on mo-ped

Maui police arrested a 33-year-old homeless man from Pennsylvania in connection with a robbery Thursday of the Wailea branch of First Hawaiian Bank.

About 9 a.m., a man approached a bank teller with a note demanding that money be placed in a paper bag, police said. No weapon was seen, and the suspect then fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money and got onto a silver mo-ped heading west down Wailea Iki Drive, from Wailea Iki Place.

About 10:30 a.m., Kihei patrol officers were making checks in the Wailea/Makena area and found a silver mo-ped off Old Makena Road near the Polo Beach Club matching the description of the one used in the robbery, police said.

Officers then found a man matching the description of the suspect. The man told police that the mo-ped belonged to him. After the man was detained, police sent a digital photo to the bank, and staffers identified the man as the robber.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
