Kamehameha shows why it’s No. 1

The Kamehameha softball team showed up on Wednesday as if it expected to see Keiki Carlos in the circle.

The top-ranked Warriors thumped unranked Mid-Pacific 14-2 in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings due to the mercy rule on Wednesday at Kamehameha.

The Owls, who have won the past two state championships and past three ILH titles largely due to the pitching of then-MPI standout Carlos, jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a long home run by Sarah Onishi. Then the Warriors had their chance at the bat.

Kamehameha responded with four runs in the first off back-to-back home runs by Ateisha Norton and Kaya Naiwi. Norton’s blast was a three-run shot. Mid-Pacific starting pitcher Kayla Au threw 31 pitches and gave up five hits before getting out of the inning and giving way to Kristi Nagamine.

Nagamine didn’t do much better. After Samantha Sakihara drove in Gabrielle Hollinger for another run for the Owls in the top of the second, Kamehameha shelled Nagamine for eight runs on eight hits in the bottom half. Kamehameha put 12 of the first 13 batters on base in the inning, but had only one extra-base hit. The damage could have been even worse, but the Warriors left the bases loaded when Nagamine got Norton to ground to short to end it after 50 pitches. Kamehameha also left the bases loaded in the third inning.

The destruction has at least one coach anointing the Warriors the best team in the land.

“They are the best team in the state right now and I would be shocked if they didn’t win the state tournament come May,” Mid-Pacific coach Alan Inaba said. “We just couldn’t find a way to stop them today. We threw our top two pitchers, but they just kept hitting.”

Kamehameha pitcher Kamalani Dung shut out the Owls the rest of the way, striking out eight batters, including four in the fourth inning.

“Kamalani is one that she is definitely able to keep her composure,” Kamehameha coach Aloha Yamaguchi said. “She gave up that home run, but there was a lot of game left, so there was no doubt that she was going to flush it and move on.”

Kamehameha added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI singles by Naiwi and Dung. Naiwi had her way with Mid-Pacific, going 4-for-4 with the home run and four RBIs. She saw only five pitches all day.

“They have been hitting the ball hard when they see it,” Yamaguchi said. “You can tell when they get a good read on it, the ball goes.”

Dung and Katelynn Mahelona each had two of Kamehameha’s 14 hits.

Kamehameha improved to 5-0 and has outscored opponents 48-6 in those games.
