Write a haiku and win chance to name lion cub
The lion cubs born at the Honolulu Zoo in December will need names before they make their public debut April 6.
To determine the perfect monikers for the feisty felines, the Honolulu Zoo Society is holding a poetry contest for kids ages 8 to 13.
Keiki are asked to create a lion-inspired haiku to win the opportunity to name one of the three cubs. (A haiku is a three-line poem with five syllables in the first line, seven syllables in the second line and five syllables in the third line.)
One winner will be selected from each of three age categories — 8-9 years, 10-11 years and 12-13 years. Winners, who will be announced in early April, must choose a name from a list provided by local zookeepers.
All poems must be mailed to HZS Education, 151 Kapahulu Ave., Honolulu 96815 and be received by Friday.

Theater camp will take on ‘Dragonfly’
Though spring break is just beginning, many families are already starting to weigh their options for summer break activities.
One option that is already working to fill its cast list is the Paliku Academy of Performing Arts summer theater camp. This year the camp will tackle a re-imagined version of the show "On Dragonfly Wings," by Lisa Matsumoto and Roslyn Catracchia of Ohi‘a Productions.
Director John-Paul Tai said the summers filled with classes in singing, acting and dancing have resulted in musical productions since 2007. "We accept everyone that registers. We don’t pre-cast, so during the first week of sessions, the four instructors, including myself, will choose whoever can fill out the main roles best," Tai said.
The program culminates with performances July 19-21 and 26-28 at the Ronald E. Bright Theatre at Castle High School.
The camp, for children in grades 5 to 12, begins June 3, with classes running noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, at the Kapunahala Elementary School cafeteria, 45-828 Anoi Road in Kaneohe.
Registration is Wednesday and March 23 at the Kapunahala school cafeteria.
