A 20-year-old Mililani man was fatally injured early Monday morning in a two-car crash near Honolulu Airport.
Police said the accident was at the intersection of Kamehameha Highway and Valkenburgh Street at 4:05 a.m. The Medical Examiner’s Officer identified him as Mark Spofford.
Police said Spofford was driving a sedan south on Valkenburgh when a Jeep traveling west on Kamehameha Highway broadsided his car. Police did not say which driver had the green light.
Spofford was ejected from his car, police said.
Emergency Medical Services said Spofford was taken in extremely critical condition at 4:40 a.m. to Tripler Army Medical Center, where he died.
The driver of the Jeep, a man from Ewa Beach, was not injured, police said.
Westbound traffic on Nimitz Highway — which merges into Kamehameha Highway at Valkenburgh — was diverted to Elliott Street. Police opened the highway at about 8 a.m.
Police said it was Oahu’s 15th traffic fatality this year, compared with 16 at this time last year.
