Hawaii sand volleyball splits on mainland
The University of Hawaii women’s sand volleyball squad split a pair of matches in their first road trip of the season in Los Angeles on Friday.
The fifth-ranked Rainbow Wahine (2-1) fell to No. 4 USC, 5-0, in the morning, but followed up with a 3-2 win over No. 9 Nebraska. Tai Manu Olevao and Emily Mount challenged USC’s Sam Hirschmann and Alexa Stonish in three sets, but lost 21-11, 17-21, 15-9. Ali Longo and Karlee Riggs also fell in three sets against the Trojans.
The Rainbow Wahine also lost the Nos. 1 and 2 matches against Nebraska, but the final three pairs pulled through with wins over the Cornhuskers. Longo and Riggs won the No. 3 match 21-18, 21-16; Ashley Kastl and Manu-Olevao cruised in a 21-10, 21-10 sweep; and Olivia Urban and Kuulei Zalopany won the No. 5 match 21-15, 21-16.
UH will face Grand Canyon University and Loyola Marymount in a pair of dual matches in Phoenix today.
Hawaii Hilo softball sweeps Azusa Pacific
Vanessa Salinas hurled a two-hit shutout in the opener and Brittany Huff drove in three runs in the second game as Hawaii Hilo swept a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader Friday from visiting Azusa Pacific, 3-0 and 10-6.
The Vulcans improved to 21-13 overall and 12-4 in the PacWest. Azusa Pacific is 14-10 and 6-6.
Hawaii’s Harrison 34th in NCAA diving
Hawaii’s Aimee Harrison finished 34th in the springboard competition Friday during the NCAA swimming and diving championships in Indianapolis. Harrison will compete in the platform event today.
Honolulu’s Pate finishes second in nation
Honolulu’s Ron Pate finished second in the 3,000-meter run in the ages 65-69 division at the USA Masters Indoor national track and field championships Friday in Landover, Md., clocking 11:54.38.
