Vulcans drop baseball doubleheader
Ryan Henley’s two-run double highlighted a five-run third inning as Azusa Pacific broke up a tight game with Hawaii Hilo to win the opener of Monday’s conference baseball doubleheader 14-2 in Azusa, Calif.
The Cougars (7-17, 6-8) completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory in seven innings. The Vulcans (5-23-1, 5-17) pulled to within 2-1 in the top of the fourth on Samuel Kim’s leadoff homer to left-center only to have APU score four in the bottom of the fourth to pull away.
In the opener, the Vulcans also came within 2-1 — on Tyler Nitahara’s single to center that scored John Abreu in the top of the third.
The Cougars came back in the bottom of the inning with five runs en route to a season-high run output.
Cal Baptist sweeps Hawaii Pacific
Cal Baptist spotted Hawaii Pacific a two-run lead before scoring 20 unanswered runs in a 20-5 rout in Monday’s first game of a conference baseball doubleheader in Riverside, Calif.
The Lancers (16-8 9-1) took the second game 7-2, handing the Sea Warriors (17-11, 8-8) their seventh straight loss.
In the opener, Marvin Campbell’s two-run homer in the first gave HPU a 2-0 lead.
Cal Baptist tied it in the bottom of the inning, then scored four in the second and eight in the third to pull away.
HPU played catch-up all of the second game, trailing 6-0 after three innings, before getting on the board in the sixth on RBI hits by Kale Sumner and Keanu Kapana for the Sea Warriors’ only runs.
The teams meet again today in a doubleheader.
Chaminade doubleheader rained out
Unplayable field conditions at Central Oahu Regional Park postponed Monday’s softball doubleheader between Azusa Pacific and Chaminade.
Because the Silverswords are scheduled to leave today for competition in California, the doubleheader will be made up at a later date. Heavy rains Sunday night and Monday morning left the field too soggy for use.
Seasiders take 2 in women’s tennis
The No. 2-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team swept two matches Monday in Morrow, Ga., defeating Clark Atlanta and host Clayton State by identical 5-0 scores.
The Seasiders improved to 16-1, winning all three doubles matches and two singles matches.
Annie Hwang and Sherry Liu finished an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles in the opener, shutting out Brionne Bachus-Vonnick Boyogueno. Hwang didn’t drop a set either at No. 1 singles with a blanking of Bachus.
Sea Warriors top Silverswords in tennis
Fifth-ranked Hawaii Pacific blanked Chaminade 9-0 in a women’s tennis match Monday at Central Oahu Regional Park.
The Sea Warriors (11-1) didn’t drop a set in winning at Nos. 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles. HPU also won at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles without losing a set to the Silverswords (1-11).
BYUH golfers in eighth place in Arizona
The Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s golf team carded an aggregate 293 in the second round of the Grand Canyon Thunderbird Invitational on Monday to move into eighth place in the 16-team event in Litchfield, Ariz.
The Seasiders shot a 311 in Monday morning’s first round at the Wigwam Golf Course. BYUH takes a 604 into today’s final round, trailing the host Antelopes by 26 strokes.
Individually, Dillon Dudley and Mike Klem led the Seasiders with identical 149s, tying them for 16th place. GCU’s Jimmy Kozikowski leads with a 6-under 138.
Vulcans move up to third place in tourney
The Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team shot a 285, the lowest of the second round, to move into third place at the Tukwet Canyon Intercollegiate in Beaumont, Calif.
The Vulcans were at 590, 17 strokes behind leader Chico State in the 11-team event hosted by Cal Baptist.
Hawaii Hilo was led by Corey Kozuma’s 1-over 145. His second-round 69 vaulted him from a tie for 25th into a tie for seventh.
Chico State held the top three spots, with Lee Gearhart taking a four-stroke lead at 136 heading into today’s final round.
