Burrow defeats Payne in Bells Beach contest
Australia’s Taj Burrow defeated Hawaii’s Dusty Payne 16.33 to 10.27 in the third round of the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach surf contest today in Victoria, Australia.
Kauai’s Sebastien Zietz will surf his third-round heat when the contest resumes Monday, surf permitting. Hawaii’s Carissa Moore is also scheduled to surf in the women’s final against Australia’s Tyler Wright.
UH splits water polo matches
Facing a pair of nationally ranked opponents, the No. 8 Hawaii women’s water polo team split a pair of nonconference matches Saturday, beating No. 15 UC San Diego 9-6 before falling to No. 2 Stanford 17-5 at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-9) and Tritons (14-11) were tied at 4-4 after two quarters before UH pulled away. Monika Eggens scored three goals to lead Hawaii.
The Cardinal (22-1) dominated the Rainbow Wahine, outscoring them in every period. Amarens Genee led UH with two goals.
Hawaii Hilo golf team finishes 38 over par
The Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team recorded a 38-over-par 878 at the NCAA U.S. Intercollegiate golf tournament held on the Stanford University Golf Course on Saturday.
Stanford claimed the team title with a 23-under-par 817, followed by Texas Christian at 17 under.
Hawaii Hilo’s Jamie Hall led the five-man squad in the final standings with a 217 (71-73-73) to tie for 51st place.
Chaminade on 9-game winning streak
The Chaminade softball team earned its ninth consecutive win with a doubleheader victory over Holy Names in Hayward, Calif., on Saturday.
The Silverswords (15-13, 11-7 PacWest) won the first game 7-2 and followed it up with a 7-3 win in the nightcap.
Chaminade’s Rayna Strom-Okimoto hit two home runs against the Hawks (11-25, 6-8).

The Argonauts (17-12, 11-7 PacWest) had a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat the Vulcans 10-9 in the first game. Hawaii Hilo (24-14, 15-5) bounced back in the second game, winning 9-1.
Cal Baptist dominates UHH baseball series
The Hawaii Hilo baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Cal Baptist on Saturday to finish the four-game series at 0-4.
The Lancers (21-9, 14-2 PacWest) dominated the Vulcans (7-29, 7-23) 22-1 in the opener and 12-0 in the nightcap.
» Hawaii Pacific took two games from Point Loma Nazarene on Saturday in San Diego to improve to 20-14 overall and 11-11 in the conference.
Marvin Campbell went 2-for-4 with two RBIs as the Sea Warriors won the first game 4-3.
In the seven-inning second game, Michael Murray pitched a five-hit complete game as HPU downed the Sea Lions (14-17, 11-9) 3-1.
Alvarez sets record at Stanford Invitational
Hawaii senior Amanda Alvarez set a school record in the triple jump at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday.
Alvarez broke her own record, set last week, with a leap of 42 feet, 9.5 inches to rank second in the NCAA West Region and sixth nationally. She also competed in the 100-meter finals to place eighth with a time of 14.57 seconds.
Stosik and Pate to speak at QB Club
The Honolulu Quarterback Club announced Ray Stosik and Ron Pate will speak at its luncheon at Maple Garden restaurant on Monday.
Stosik is president and managing director of 141 Premiere Sports & Entertainment, which currently helps organize PGA and LPGA events in Hawaii.
Ron Pate will speak about his experience at the USA Indoor Masters National Track and Field competition, where he finished second in his age group in the 3,000-meter run.
The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. and costs $15 for members and guests.
