Pearl Harbor-based USS Chung-Hoon deploys
The Pearl Harbor-based destroyer USS Chung-Hoon is deploying to Asia.
The Chung-Hoon and its crew of nearly 280 sailors will set sail today.
The ship was originally scheduled to leave at the end of February, but the Navy delayed its departure so the service could plan for and implement automatic budget cuts.
Navy Region Hawaii said Monday the ship will conduct operations with allies and partners while deployed.
The Chung-Hoon is named after the late Native Hawaiian World War II hero, Rear Adm. Gordon Paiea Chung-Hoon.
He was awarded the Navy Cross and Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and extraordinary heroism as the commanding officer of the USS Sigsbee from May 1944 to October 1945.
