A 41-year-old California man died Thursday while swimming in the ocean off Kapaa, Kauai.
The man’s identity has not been released.
At about 2:50 p.m. police received a report of a swimmer apparently in distress in the water fronting the vacant lot next to the Plantation Hale Hotel.
People were attempting to assist the man when firefighters arrived. Firefighters assisted in bringing the unresponsive man to shore and began performing CPR.
Medics then transported the man to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
It was Kauai’s 11th reported drowning so far this year and the 13th tourist to drown statewide.
Because of a National Weather Service high-surf warning for all north- and west-facing shores until at least 6 a.m. Saturday, lifeguards urge beachgoers to swim near a lifeguard tower.
