Pitchers help keep Campbell perfect

Cool cats, indeed.

Even the baby Sabers are smooth against rugged competition. Sophomores Dorrien Hermosura and Kila Kapihe combined on a four-hit shutout as No. 2 Campbell battled past No. 10 Pearl City 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon at the Chargers field.

The Sabers improved to 11-0 and are closing in on the program’s first unbeaten regular season in at least two decades, according to the coaching staff. Pearl City slipped to 7-4.

Hermosura and Kapihe outdueled Pearl City’s versatile Tanner Tokunaga, who scattered six hits, struck out three and walked one in seven innings. He threw 103 pitches in a gutsy effort.

It was close most of the way, a 2-0 game entering the seventh inning, when the visiting Sabers pushed three runs across the plate to put it out of reach.

Hermosura, a crafty left-hander, allowed just three hits in five innings with one strikeout and no walks. Kapihe, a righty, continued his efficient pitching out of the bullpen. He allowed just one hit in two innings.

Campbell got a one-out double by Alii Pedrina in the top of the third. After he stole third base, he scored on a groundout by Brannon Okinaka for a 1-0 Sabers lead.

In the fifth, Hermosura led off with a fly ball to right that was muffed. Courtesy runner Zachary Recolan later scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Dewayne Sprinkle, and Campbell led 2-0.

Hermosura was a starter in preseason, but rough outings against Kamehameha and Hilo derailed him for some time.

“I got ripped by them,” he said.

Then came the stellar performance of Campbell’s top two starters, relegating Hermosura to the bench.

“In the OIA, we went back to Wednesday-Saturday games, so we can get by with two starters,” coach Rory Pico said.

With the OIA Red West title wrapped up, it was an opportunity for the young pitcher.

“That felt pretty good. I wasn’t feeling too good today (illness), but my change-up was working. We were working backwards,” Hermosura said of using the change-up to set up his fastball.

Though the Sabers are in position to rest up any starter, they’re playing — and coaching — with the same philosophy as always.

“We take the approach that we’re here to get better every day,” Pico said. “It was good to see Dorrien get his confidence again.”

Kapihe is not large of stature, but his fastball pops.

Kapihe entered in the bottom of the sixth after Hermosura hit his limit (62 pitches). There was one runner on base when Kapihe allowed a base hit to Tokunaga, and suddenly a

2-0 lead didn’t seem so safe.

“I couldn’t find the strike zone,” he said, noting that his previous stint against Pearl City more than three weeks ago was more effective.

He got the next batter, Colby Hirano, to fly out, and Matt Tsutomi lined into a 4-6 double play to end the threat.

The superb sophomores didn’t surprise Pearl City coach Mitch Yamato.

“We knew from JV time (winter season) that they had some up-and-comers. We knew they’d be tough,” he said.

Now Pearl City has to beat Aiea on Saturday to secure second place in the OIA Red West — and a first-round bye in the playoffs.
