State House resolution supports GMO food labeling

A resolution in the state House is asking for federal labeling of genetically modified food.

The resolution introduced by Kauai Rep. Derek Kawakami was unanimously approved Friday. It asks Congress to support legislation requiring the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration to come up with a nationwide system for monitoring and labeling of genetically engineered food.

Across the country, various states are considering food labeling requirements for genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. A bill to label GMO food in Hawaii failed earlier this session.

The resolution states that transparency and accuracy regarding the genetic and nutritional composition of food is a right that should be protected by law. Kawakami says it makes sense to address the issue on a national level.
