There’s a fashion boom going on at Hono­lulu Community College, with 19 senior designers taking over the runway for "POSH," the Fashion Technology program’s 2013 fashion show.

Instructor Joy Nagaue, who joined the program in 1979, said the school will be graduating the most students in the 34 years she’s been there. Typically, the school graduates about eight students.

The "really big show" guarantees an eyeful for all who attend, but for the students it just means less runway time as each student’s presentation will be limited to two minutes, as opposed to about five minutes as in the past.

Blame it on "Project Runway." The school that nurtured contestants Jay Sario (Season 7) and Andy South (Season 8), aka Ariyaphon Southiphong, has become a magnet for starry-eyed designers who find acceptance at the school.

"It started with (instructor) Mrs. (Lillian) Zane," Nagaue said. "She would cook for them and treat them like family. We always make sure they’re OK. Most of them are not traditional students, so we don’t let them fall through the cracks."

Each of the aspiring designers will show his five best designs, running the gamut from street wear to gowns, swimsuits, business ensembles, menswear and children’s togs.
