Honolulu police detectives have opened a homicide investigation after a man was killed in an apparent early morning assault in Kalihi.
Two men were in custody as police investigated reports that a group of men were seen chasing a male, police said.
Paramedics were called to Halona Street at 3 a.m. Friday and treated a man, described as in his 20s to 30s, for a trauma wound. The victim died at the scene at 3:40 a.m., Emergency Medical Services said.
In custody Friday night were two men from Kalihi, 19 and 21 years old, both of the same Waiakamilo Road address. Police arrested the younger man at 4:15 p.m. at Waiakamilo Road and Mookaula Street, and the older man was arrested 14 minutes later at Waiakamilo Road and Moowaa Street.
Both were booked for investigation of second-degree murder.
Police closed off the area from the Houghtailing Street offramp on H-1 westbound to Halona Street, and Kohou Street to Houghtailing Street as they investigated.
The roads were closed around 3:52 a.m. and reopened four hours later.
