Rain ahead of a cold front  approaching the islands could be heavy on Kauai starting today, National Weather Service forecasters say. The weather service issued a flash flood watch for Kauai County through Tuesday morning.

Forecasters said the rain could create hazardous driving conditions because of ponding on roads and low visibility.

A flash flood watch means conditions may develop that could lead to flash flooding.

Rains ahead of the front could also fall on Oahu today. The front is expected to reach Oahu early Monday morning. But there are no weather advisories issued yet for Honolulu.

The forecast for Honolulu today calls for partly sunny, but hazy skies because light, southerly winds are blowing vog from the volcano over western islands and scattered showers. The rainy, voggy weather is likely to stay with us through Tuesday.

Forecasters say the chance of rain, possibly heavy rain, is about 70 percent tonight for Honolulu.

Kauai and Maui got some heavy showers Saturday ahead of the front.

The showers over east Maui prompted a flood advisory at about midnight, which was lifted by 2 a.m. Hana and Kaupo recorded about .4 inches of rain during the downpour.

Hanapepe got just over an inch of rain in the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. today. Lihue received about .65 inches, and Mana  in west Kauai recorded 1.2 inches.

The front is expected to move Tuesday north of the islands, where it is expected to dissipate.
