SALT LAKE CITY » A Utah man has been charged with making terrorist threats after he says he was joking about a bomb threat at last weekend’s Salt Lake City Marathon.
KTVX-TV reports the Salt Lake District Attorney filed the second-degree felony charges Monday against 59-year-old George Zinn of Salt Lake City.
Police say Zinn sent an email to the SLC Marathon Marketing group on Friday requesting to place bombs at the marathon’s finish line on Saturday. They say he has a history of interfering with police activities.
The threat came just days after the Boston Marathon explosions that left three dead and more than 200 wounded.
One neighbors told KTVX he talked to Zinn the day before his arrest and he claimed it all was a joke.
The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Zinn has a criminal record dating back to 1989 that includes dozens of convictions for petty crimes such as criminal trespass, theft of services, interfering with a police officer and disturbing the peace.
He was being held in the Salt Lake County jail in lieu of $100,000 bail.
