Waianae’s Medeiros loses in UFC debut
Waianae’s Yancy Medeiros lost by TKO on Saturday night in his UFC debut against Rustam Khabilov at UFC 159 in Newark, N.J.
The fight was stopped 2 minutes, 32 seconds into the first round when Medeiros suffered an injury to his right thumb.
Referee Dan Miragliotta took one look at Medeiros’ injury before quickly stopping the fight, handing Medeiros (9-1) his first professional loss.
In the main event, Jon "Bones" Jones successfully defended his light heavyweight title for the fifth time with a first-round TKO of Chael Sonnen.
Wahine make Big West water polo final
Monika Eggens scored five goals to lead the top-seeded Hawaii water polo team to a 10-5 victory over fourth-seeded Long Beach State in the Big West Conference tournament semifinals Saturday in Irvine, Calif.
In helping the Rainbow Wahine (20-9) make the tournament final, Eggens became UH’s all-time leading goal scorer with 240. Amarens Genee added three goals against the 49ers (24-7).
Hawaii faces second-seeded UC Irvine (21-8) in today’s championship match.
HPU advances to national championships
The Hawaii Pacific women’s tennis team defeated Grand Canyon 5-1 in the NCAA Division II West Regional on Saturday in Manoa, advancing to the national championships for the seventh consecutive year.
The Sea Warriors won all three doubles matches and two singles matches to clinch.
HPU next plays in the round of 16 in Surprise, Ariz., on May 8 against either the New York Institute of Technology or Chestnut Hill.

The Rainbow Wahine lost three singles matches, all in straight sets, and two doubles matches. With the team outcome decided, all other matches were not finished.
HPU softball team sweeps Chaminade
Hawaii Pacific rallied with three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, and the Sea Warriors beat Chaminade 6-5 in the first game of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at Howard A. Okita Field.
Keila Elderts brought in the winning run with a single to left field. HPU (30-17, 19-11) then earned an 8-1 victory over the Silverswords (25-19, 17-11) in the nightcap.
Sea Warriors baseball team drops 2
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team lost both ends of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader against Fresno Pacific on Saturday in Fresno, Calif.
The Sunbirds (27-19, 18-14) got 11 hits off Sea Warriors pitching to win the first game 7-2. In the seven-inning second game, HPU (30-20, 19-17) was shut out until the final frame. But the Sea Warriors’ rally fell short in the 8-5 loss.
Smith, Landeza to speak at QB Club
Kalaheo boys basketball coach Alika Smith and runner Johnny Landeza will be the guest speakers for the Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon on Monday at the Maple Garden restaurant.
In February, Smith guided the Mustangs to their second straight state title — in Division II last season and in Division I this season. Landeza recently returned from the Boston Marathon and will talk about the race’s tragic bombing.
Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., with the program to follow at noon. The cost is $15.
