Kona courtroom evacuated because of noxious odor

A district courtroom in Kona was evacuated briefly Monday morning after “noxious order” was reported.

Marsha Kitagawa, state Judiciary spokeswoman, said the evacuation affected only the courtroom of District Court Joseph Florendo on the second floor of at 79-1020 Haukapila St.

Kitagawa said people in Florendo’s court room were evacuated after people reportedly were coughing.

State deputy sheriffs and county police helped with evacuation of the courtroom at 9:30 a.m. and the county’s fire department and its hazardous materials unit was called.

The all-clear was issued just after 10 a.m.

No one received medical treatment, police said.

Kitagawa said the Circuit Court, which shares the second floor with District Court operations, was not affected.

The District Court’s morning calender will be rescheduled.

The state Health Department, which has offices on the ground level in the same building, was not affected by the evacuation order.
