Punishment for dog turns fatal for animal
A 36-year-old Haleiwa woman turned herself in to police Sunday after she allegedly killed her pet dog for misbehaving.
Police said the suspect said she was upset with the dog’s behavior and was trying to discipline the animal when it died. The incident occurred at the suspect’s home at 6 p.m. Sunday.
After she surrendered to police, she was arrested on suspicion of cruelty to animals.
A spokeswoman for the Hawaiian Humane Society declined to say what the suspect used to try to discipline the dog or the sex and breed of the animal.
Search continues for missing British man
The Coast Guard and Navy continue to search a remote area in the middle of the Pacific Ocean for a British man who was reported overboard from a troubled sailboat.
United Kingdom officials reported to the U.S. Coast Guard in Hawaii on Saturday night that one man from the 38-foot vessel had fallen overboard. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Eric Chandler said a woman remained aboard and was later rescued. The Navy diverted the warship USS Peleliu to help in the search.
The search continued Monday, with Navy helicopters and Coast Guard planes taking turns and resting on Midway Atoll.
Meanwhile, the sailboat is on its own on the ocean because the warship has no way to secure it. Navy crew members put a tracking device on the sailboat and turned on its navigation lights.

‘Noxious’ smell in courtroom spurs coughing
A district courtroom in Kona was evacuated briefly Monday morning after a "noxious odor" was reported.
Marsha Kitagawa, state Judiciary spokeswoman, said the evacuation affected only the courtroom of District Judge Joseph Florendo on the second floor of 79-1020 Haukapila St.
Kitagawa said people in Florendo’s courtroom were evacuated after people reportedly were coughing.
State deputy sheriffs and county police helped evacuate the courtroom at 9:30 a.m., and the county’s Fire Department and its hazardous materials unit were called. The all-clear was issued just after 10 a.m.
No one received medical treatment, police said.
Kitagawa said the Circuit Court, which shares the second floor, was not affected.
Indicted duo allegedly grew pot in Puna
A grand jury has indicted two people on Hawaii island on charges that they ran a marijuana growing operation in an underground bunker in Puna.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported that the grand jury in Hilo returned indictments Wednesday against Charles Howard Lanham III, 60, and Linda Lee Stallings, 67.
Police say the two operated an underground bunker on a property in Glenwood that was about 40 by 80 feet.
Authorities say they recovered more than 500 marijuana plants, about 10 pounds of dried marijuana and a small amount of hashish from the bunker and surrounding property.
Police also seized $4,000 in cash, two vehicles, a backhoe, trailer, three diesel generators and tools.
