Mid-Pacific loses boys basketball coach
In two short years, Jason Hopkins revamped the Mid-Pacific boys basketball program.
But Wednesday will be his last day on campus before he returns to Seattle. Hopkins, 26, is leaving his job as a teacher at MPI to deal with a “family situation.”
“Unfortunately, other things take priority. It’s definitely one of those things. If I didn’t take care of this situation, I’d regret it for the rest of my life,” said Hopkins, who preferred to keep the specifics private.
Assistant coach Kris Maeda will oversee the offseason program until a new head coach is selected.
Former NFL player is Kamehameha applicant
Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Doug Cosbie is one of the applicants for the vacant Kamehameha head football coach position.
Cosbie was drafted by the Cowboys in 1979 and played until ’88. He set team records for a tight end with catches and yardage. He later became an assistant under Bill Walsh at Stanford, then became athletic director and head coach at Menlo College. That’s where the connection to Hawaii began.
“A couple of guys I coached said, ‘Our school is looking for a new coach,’ ” said Cosbie, who interviewed for the position over the weekend and flew back to the mainland Sunday.
