Cooling trade winds have shifted to southerly Kona winds, bringing vog and the chance of afternoon showers through the weekend and into next week.

Forecasters say there’s a chance the muggy, hazy weather may stick around through late next week, when the trade winds finally return.

A weather system approaching the islands from the northwest is the reason for the change in winds and weather.

The system is expected to weaken as it moves across the state. But another weather system behind is likely to keep winds light and the trade winds from returning until late next week, forecasters said.

Moisture from the passing cold front could bring afternoon showers, some heavy, to the islands through the weekend.

The University of Hawaii’s vog forecast shows the plume of volcanic emissions returning over Oahu starting today.

The forecast for Honolulu calls for a 50 percent chance of rain through the weekend.
