Pedestrians were advised to steer clear on Keawe Street after a suspicious package closed off Keawe and Ilalo Streets on Monday, May 6, 2013 in Kakaako. Honolulu Police Department's Explosives team were enroute to the scene.
Honolulu police reopened Keawe Street between Ala Moana Boulevard and Ilalo Street after closing it due to a suspicious package Monday afternoon.
Police checked the package, found at 677 Ala Moana Blvd., the former Gold Bond Building, and discovered lava rocks that were sent to the U.S. Geological Survey, HPD said.
Honolulu police had closed off a half-block of Keawe Street makai of Ala Moana Boulevard.
The office building is also directly across Keawe Street from the state Sheriff Division booking and receiving station.
Employees and detainees were "sheltering in place" there, said Toni Schwartz, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman.
