Man accused of throwing woman off cliff will undergo evaluation
Justin Wynn Klein, who allegedly threw a Japanese visitor off a cliff on Kauai’s north shore, will undergo a mental examination to determine if he’s fit to stand trial.
A hearing on the results of Klein’s examination is scheduled for June 19 at Fifth Circuit Court.
Police arrested Klein in April after a four-month manhunt. In December 2012, Klein, 37, allegedly threw Azusa Ino from a 15-foot cliff in Kalalau Valley. She suffered significant head injuries and was hospitalized for more than a week before she was released and returned to Japan.
Klein’s sister had said Klein and Ino, 31, of the Fukuoka prefecture, had a “romantic” relationship.
A grand jury indicted Klein for second-degree attempted murder. Police arrested Klein at Lydgate Beach Park after he approached a group of beachgoers and identified himself.
His trial is scheduled to be held on Aug. 5.
