Ferragamo offers custom Vara and Varina shoes
With customization in the zeitgeist, Salvatore Ferragamo is marking the 35th anniversary of its Vara shoe by giving clients the opportunity to design their own pair of Vara or Varina shoes by choosing the material, color, grosgrain bow and hardware. There are 63 possible combinations.
The original Vara is a midheel shoe with grosgrain bow. The Varina is a ballet flat version of the shoe introduced in 2007.
The cost of the shoes, including a metal plate on the bottom bearing the wearer’s initials, and shipping anywhere in the United States, is $550.
Visit www.ferragamo.com to try your hand at design. To see how some tastemakers wear their Varas and Varinas, visit icona.ferragamo.com, which will post photographer Claiborne Swanson Frank’s portraits of 21 women over 21 days this month.
Isle designer shares spotlight at Vegas jewelry trade show
Hawaii jewelry designer Jason Dow is one of five JCK Rising Star Award winners who will be spotlighted at this year’s JCK (Jewelers Circular Keystone) international trade show in Las Vegas.
As North America’s largest jewelry show, JCK annually names an elite group of Rising Stars, chosen via an extensive jury process. Dow will showcase his work at the trade show’s Design Center from May 31 through June 4. The other Rising Stars are Bibi Van der Beldin of the Netherlands, Cornelia Goldsmith of California, Naomi Blumenthal of Massachusetts and Patrick Mohs of Minnesota.
Dow discovered his passion in a high school metalworking class before studying dentistry at the University of Colorado. He had nearly completed the program when he realized his artistic calling.
He graduated from the Gemological Institute of America in 2002 and built up his Hawaii clientele. In 2010 he entered his first professional competition, the prestigious Saul Bell Design Award Competition, winning first place in the gold category with his Mandala Keepsake Ring with its 150 channel-set diamonds.
He won over the commercial market when his designs graced the necks of models in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition that same year.
