The University of Hawaii released its Rainbow Wahine volleyball schedule on Wednesday. It starts with reigning NCAA champion Texas on Aug. 30. UH coach Dave Shoji hopes it ends for the second straight year in Seattle.
The Wahine went 27-3 last season, falling in five to Washington in the NCAA tournament’s second round. The final four is in Seattle this year.
Along with the Longhorns, the Wahine play San Diego, UCLA, New Mexico State and Arizona in tournaments the first three weeks. The fourth week they take a rare non-conference trip to the Shocker Challenge in Wichita, Kan. Wichita State beat Nebraska in a spring exhibition last month.
The Wahine open and close their Big West season against UC Riverside, hosting the Highlanders Sept. 27 and playing at Riverside Nov. 30. Hawaii takes a 73-match conference winning streak into the season, the longest in the nation.
Shoji could become his sport’s winningest coach the second week. He has 1,103 wins going into his 39th season, and needs four to pass former UCLA coach Andy Banachowski and move into No. 1 on the career list.
