A Moiliili man who was out on bail on a charge of trying to set a man on fire Saturday allegedly assaulted another man Wednesday, police said.
Jamal Morris, 24, of Alexander Street was arrested on suspicion of assault at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, two blocks from where Saturday’s attack occurred.
The victim’s mother said her son gave a ride to a man who attacked him while he was driving near King Street and University Avenue.
Morris was out on $2,000 bail in the first assault case. He was supposed be in Honolulu District Court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for arraignment on charges of second-degree terroristic threatening. In that case he allegedly doused a 37-year-old man with a flammable fluid and tried to ignite it, police said.
Morris failed to show up in court, so his bail was revoked and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
No charges have been filed regarding Wednesday’s attack; Morris remained in custody facing a possible third-degree assault charge.
In a police affidavit filed in District Court this week, the victim in the first case told police he was playing drums at Da Spot restaurant on South King Street about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when Morris approached him and began pouring liquid on his head and body.
A witness told police that Morris said, “I’m gonna get you on fire” as he tried to light the liquid with a lighter.
Another witness said she heard Morris say, “I got you. I’m going to kill you,” the affidavit said. A third witness told police Morris said, “You did magic on me.”
A bottle of vodka was found at the scene, along with a yellow lighter.
The victim did not require treatment. He told police he did not know why Morris attacked him.
