A stellar season for Wahine softball …
"It sucks that it was the last game," a valiant Kaia Parnaby said with a feeble smile after Sunday’s season-ending loss by the University of Hawaii Wahine softballers to the University of Washington Huskies.
Yes, going down for the season and out of the NCAA tourney with a 8-0 shutout has to sting, especially given the caliber of this team, led by pitcher Parnaby and fellow seniors Kelly Majam and Jessica Iwata.
But the softball team has given fans a stellar season — several of them in recent years, in fact — with a promising recruiting class coming up. For this, Wahine players and Coach Bob Coolen, we say mahalo. And to the team’s five seniors: Lots of aloha.
… and a stellar series for ‘Bows baseball
It was a bittersweet occasion Sunday when the University of Hawaii Rainbows baseball team played its last home game of the season. Due to return as the Rainbow Warriors next year, the team swept its three-game series against UC Davis.
Some in the stands wondered aloud why the ‘Bows couldn’t have played as well throughout the season. The team is 10-14 in the Big West and 15-33 overall — but it could have been worse. With one more series to go, at UC Riverside starting Thursday, the team ranks seventh out of 10 teams in the Big West.
Meanwhile, it was the last UH home game for eight senior ‘Bows. One of them, Pi‘ikea Kitamura, achieved his 200th career hit in addition to the emotional high of his last day on home turf.
